Perry is the daughter of actor Laurie Metcalf, and Jeff Perry. Her first television performances were Jackie Harris on ABC's sitcom Roseanne. Her mother played her role. Her parents did not allow her to begin acting by her parents until the age of adulthood because they were afraid of the stress it would result in. Perry states that she did not want to perform in highschool but decided to start playing as a way to make friends at Northwestern University when she switched to it from Boston University. When she graduated, Perry went in New York to search for television work landing small roles on series such as Law & Order: Criminal Intent but homesickness brought the actress back to California where she found acting work. She and her mother starred on Broadway with her in The Other Place, in 2013. In 2015 she performed alongside her father as well as Kevin McKidd in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize-winning film Anna Christie on the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble in West Los Angeles. Perry played a part in nine episodes of ABC's thriller The Family during 2016. In 2017, Perry had a minor role on the ABC political drama Scandal in which her father was the main character. That same year she was cast as a younger version of Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) in Young Sheldon, a spin-off of the CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory again as a teen model of the mother's role. Despite her family link to the character she got the role via an audition.
